Beginnings

Fitness in Recovery began as a grassroots organization in December 2015 with its first Sunday workout held on 12/13/2015 in Narberth, Pennsylvania.Through 2016 and 2017, FIR expanded by offering workouts on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Expansion


In 2018 and 2019, we added 4 new locations:
Bryn Mawr (LPE), PENN, Rosemont (CFF) and Wedge Recovery Centers.

Recognition


In August of 2019, we received the Penn Medicine CAREs Grant.

This award is given to organizations and individuals for their volunteerism and effort on improving the community.

Organization


By August 2019, we organized into 3 different divisions:

  • CommunityWorkouts everyday at two locations in the Philadelphia suburbs.
  • CollegiateAt UPENN and available to all degree-seeking students in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
  • ClinicalWorkouts at The Wedge Recovery Centers in South Philadelphia 2x a week (pre-Covid)

Covid-Era


Between March 2020-March 2022, FIR pivoted the in-person workshop plan and created an online certification course. FIR also continued its community division programming within the parameters of the COVID-19 restrictions - even adding safe-distancing friendly activities like group rides. FIR continued its clinical work in medical settings. 

Present-Day


Fitness in Recovery is ramping up its clinical work in different settings including inpatient, outpatient, and residential. 

Expanding our reach to different populations including neurodegenerative and neurodivergent conditions.
